I recently setup a new blog with only one post and it has hardly been marketed. Guess what? I got over 6800 comment spam on the blog entry already. Spammers are then wasting their time. I am new to blogging and have a word press blog which is blocking everything. I installed disqus on my other google blog but it does not seem to be successful so is not getting viewed let alone human spam!

Re: Perspective On Human Spamming

Thanks

Re: Perspective On Human Spamming

I agree that spam is an issue and it takes away from my time that could be spent doing something useful. I even have an entire post on my site that explains that quality comments are welcome and encouraged, but that spam or low quality comments such as "nice site, Dude!" will be deleted. Still doesn't stop it.

Re: Perspective On Human Spamming

I agree with your view. Some are easy to spot and others are completely legitimate and harder to see. Many people use commenting as a form of advanced link building. I understand your perspective about wanting encouragement and validation. But each comment counts as an update to the search engines, and as such, I've seen many pages receive higher PR and rank higher in the search engines due, in part, to the sheer number of comments on that page. This brings validation from others who find your site because of the comments. It's a rippling out effect.

Re: Perspective On Human Spamming

Comment spamming softwares are hitting bad on wordpress blogs specially even Akismet is dying to stop to them.
All illogical spam comments specially of drugs and porn are hitting back the webmasters trying it hard to have a really worth comment on the post.

Re: Perspective On Human Spamming

If you are using Wordpress, there is a new plugin called wp-spamfree which has eliminated all bot spamming off my site.

Now like this post I have just human spamm

Re: Perspective On Human Spamming

I agree with you as I deleted a human spammer off my site this morning. One thing that has been obvious to me for the human spammers is their websites always suck when I click on them to check out how posted a comment.

I look the website in the comment that allow to leave on the page has to be just as good as the comment that they leave.

Re: Perspective On Human Spamming

Worst thing about this human spammers are they are everywhere. They don't even think if that post will help them or not. I've seen so many spam comments in my blog with "Nice post" so I automatically remove it.

Re: Perspective On Human Spamming

Like all of us, it's great to see valid comments on your blog. Always makes you think that someone actually likes what you're doing. A majority of my comments though are spam, and blatant spam at that. It has to be from automated comment programs because there's just no other way they would even find my blog. Big thanks to askimet for stopping 99% of these terrible comments filled with links to viagra sites and what not. Your point about "borderline spam" is interesting though. I'll let an obvious SEO intended comment go through if they really do leave a good comment. If they really write a good enough comment I'll let their "name" of "NY Mets Jerseys" go through. Even most of these though are pretty generic and spammy. They like to say things like "nice site, do you know where I can get Mets jerseys". No I don't and I know that you already do, they're on your site. I'll give them a little bit of credit for trying though but should have tried harder. Once again though, I don't know where I'd be without akimet.

Re: Perspective On Human Spamming

I hear you on the spamming part.
